Gathered in a Truck

The tour is steadily speeding towards it’s end and we only have six nights left.
and it’s still going well.
i’m still alive
i still have a voice
and i can count the times i’ve forgotten my lyrics on only one hand.
so that’s all good.
there have been a couple more highlights that i’d like to…highlight.
nestled in the middle of this tour were two festival dates where i had to tear away from the comforting wing of opening for another band and stand up on my own two feet. at these two dates i would be the main pull. the rooms could have been empty and it would be my fault. i would also be in direct competition with other bands in other venues around the festival.
so i was nervous.
the first festival was the gathering festival in oxford. i was set to play at the truck store, which is a cool indie record store. my first in-store performance! and i was top of the bill which was terrifying. i walked past the shop as the first band were on and the place was rammed with people even standing outside. so i felt a little more excited. i went back again later on when the band had finished and the whole place had completely emptied, so i felt terrified again.
what if it was empty when i played? how embarrassing and upsetting would that be?
but as usual with anything i worry about, i had no need to worry (what really is the point of worrying anyway? such a waste of energy) the place filled up nicely and even though my inner critique kept reminding me that it wasn’t as full as it was for the other band i witnessed, it still felt very full and very welcoming, and very memorable.
chatting to people afterwards was great as i am beginning to meet folks who have heard my songs on the radio, or online or somewhere and are seeking me out specifically.
this is amazing to me. and i’m very thankful and happy about it.
i think i’m slowly beginning to believe i might actually be able to have a career doing this stuff, that people do really like what i do and that i won’t wake up any minute now. but it’s still early days.
but thanks oxford, thanks gathering festival and thanks to truck store who are right now the only shop that stock my cd.
